A Day When We Were Still Together

(Squeaking sound)

I heard the sound outside the window and woke up, but still lying in bed.
Father ate instant noodles with luncheon meat and egg while watching tv. I was brushing my teeth in the
bathroom and thinking about throwing away the old toothbrush.
Father stood in front of the door, asking me to get up. “Okay,” said I three seconds later, not getting up.

At 10:37, my sister and I changed our clothes, mother tied our hair, and father sat on the sofa, watching TV and
waiting.
“When will you be back home?” asked mother. “Before dinner,” answered father. I glanced at father.
We waited for a lift in the lobby. I was having breakfast.

We/ got off. Waiting for the traffic light, green light on, weI crossed the road. My shoelaces were loose. /
stopped, tightened it, and kept walking into Kowloon Park.

“What are you into?” asked father. “Birds,” answered my sister. We stood before the park map. I saw someone
standing in front of the park map.

Aviary.

The Aviary is comprised of seven planted enclosures which accommodate over 90 birds of 24 species, including
Blue & Yellow Macaw, Green-winged Macaw, Victoria Crowned Pigeon, Nicobar Pigeon and others. In recent
years, the Aviary successfully bred Nicobar Pigeon?

Father looked at my sister and me from a distance. My sister and I looked at Green-winged Macaws. I took a
picture of Blue & Yellow Macaws with my phone.

Father suggested taking a photo, and he asked a tourist for help. We stood in front of a white fence. I passed
behind the tourist. Father thanked the tourist and took the camera back.
Father asked,” Go to the Viewing Cone?” I said, “I want to go to the Discovery Playground.” Father said “Okay.”

Discovery Playground, the restored fortifications and cannon emplacements on the knoll are transformed into
a playground for children under the age of 13.

Father sat on a park bench. I sat on a park bench. Twenty minutes passed.
My sister and I returned to father. Father took us to East Tsim Sha Tsui for lunch. No one sitting on the bench
now.

Went downstairs, walked through the swimming pool, went downstairs, downstairs. Left Kowloon Park. I
walked past Chungking Mansions, remembering to exchange notes someday. A few South Asian men stood
before the entrance.

“Why do Green-winged Macaws have a weird name?” I asked father. Father asked my sister and me, “What do
you want for lunch?”
My phone was vibrating. Oops, forgot to send the document to colleagues.

Imperial Hotel, Sheraton Hotel, Rosewood Hong Kong, Kowloon Shangri-La, The Royal Garden, Regal Kowloon
Hotel, InterContinental Grand Stanford, Regal Kowloon Hotel, The Royal Garden. We went to a Chinese
restaurant in Houston Centre.

So crowded during lunch hour, father gave my sister and me a dim sum menu. I said, “I want McDonald’s
instead.”
/ ordered Filet-O-Fish, looking at the opposite eating Big Mac, and remembered that he likes Sausage
McMuffin with Egg.

At 14:47, a feather from the Green-winged Macaw fell. Birds outside the cage fled from the west to the east.
Father got his wallet and paid the bill, HKD 164, thank you.

“You didn’t eat much,” said father. No answer. Two women walked into the restaurant. We left Houston Centre.
Here we could see Christmas lights.

Many tourists were by the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront. An ice cream truck next to the pier had a long queue. We
walked through the crowd. A boy threw his ice cream cup into a rubbish bin after eating. I went through the
crowd.

Went into the shopping mall, queuing, and father waiting outside. My sister and I walked from the toilet.

The bus stop in front of Kowloon Park. Austin Road, Kowloon Central Post Office…
Father woke me up. We/got off.

/ pressed the 35/F button and waited. I yawned. Father was looking at the lift’s numbers.

Mother prepared dinner. Father took a shower. My sister was in the room. I lay on the sofa.
I asked mother, ”What is for dinner?”

Streamed eggs, fired golden threadfin breams, fried choy sum, tomato and potato soup.
II said, “I don’t like eating fish.”
Father said, “Eating fish is healthy.” Mother said, “Eating fish is healthy.”

After dinner, mother washed dishes. Father watched tv. My sister did homework. I lay on the sofa.

At 22:31, mother switched off the room light.
